This object can be used to manage public folder hierarchies, which need to be associated with public stores. Keep in mind that public folder hierarchies can only be associated with one public store on a given Exchange server. It is also important to note that you cannot create public stores if all existing public folder hierarchies are already associated with existing stores.

Figure The metabase is loaded into memory when the IIS process starts. Configuring the metabase incorrectly can cause problems and may damage the IIS. Edit the metabase properties using MetaEdit directly only if you cannot adjust the settings in the Internet Service Manager, System Manager, or other user interface. Additional components can be used to connect to previous Exchange Server versions or foreign mail systems, or to implement extra features such as advanced security or online conferencing.
These components don't usually need to be running on every Exchange server in your organization see Figure 3. The Key Management server, in fact, must not be running on more than one server in a particular administrative group. If you need to integrate Exchange Server with an environment running previous versions of Exchange Server, you need to configure and use these services to handle directory replication with the legacy Exchange directory service.
SRS, on the other hand, communicates with the directory service of Exchange Server 5. This server collects and processes all the changes it receives during the cycle and returns the updated master address list to the requesting postoffices and Active Directory. Once an entire Dirsync cycle is complete, all postoffices and Active Directory are synchronized with each other, and each will contain a complete global address list.
This connector allows you to send messages between both systems, but it can connect to only one cc:Mail post office directly. Messages destined for other Lotus cc:Mail post offices must be routed within the Lotus cc:Mail messaging network.
The connector for Lotus cc:Mail supports directory synchronization between Active Directory and the Lotus cc:Mail post office so that you can import and export e-mail addresses automatically.
In fact, the process of exchanging addresses is less complex than the MS Mail Dirsync. The configuration and usage of the connector for Lotus cc:Mail is explained in Chapter 27, "Connecting to Lotus cc:Mail. The Connector for Lotus Notes provides connectivity to a Lotus Notes network by means of message transfer and directory synchronization. This Connector also supports various calendar functions such as meeting invitations.
It relies on Lotus Notes client software, which must be installed on the server that will run the Connector service. The Connector for Novell GroupWise supports message transfer, directory synchroniza- tion, and the exchange of calendar information. The Key Management server offers advanced security features at the application layer for e-mail messages, such as encryption and digital signatures. Once this component has been installed in your organization, you can allow your users to sign and seal messages.
A signed message provides verification of whether someone has tampered with this message on its way to the destination mailbox. A sealed message, on the other hand, is completely encrypted and prevents unauthorized persons from reading the information. This component includes various DLLs, Web pages, and script files involved in displaying Exchange Server resources in a Web browser. In a chat community, users can communicate online synchronously with each other in chat rooms, which provide text-based collaboration between users.
Multiple chat communities can be hosted on the same server, or separate instances can be hosted on multiple servers. You need not install Exchange Chat Service on the computer running Exchange Server, but Exchange Server must be installed on a server in the same domain. Instant Messaging integrates with the IIS 5. This feature provides one-to-one communication, similar to a normal telephone conversation. Instant Messaging also provides presence information, which means that you can see whether other users are working online, in which case you can send them your instant messages.
Conferencing Server of Exchange Server is primarily a centralized reservation system that allows your users to schedule and join meetings from Outlook or a Web browser.
Using the conferencing facilities of Exchange Server, you have the option to schedule online video and audio meetings and share application data. Metabase Update Service Exchange Server stores its configuration information primarily in Active Directory, relies on the SMTP service, and may use additional Internet services to extend its functionality.
Exchange Interprocess Communications Layer All Internet transport and access protocol engines need to communicate with the Information Store service to access and store messaging-related information in mailbox and public stores. To accomplish the services, restart locally or remotely Start the Internet Services Manager from the Administrative Tools program group.
In the IIS management tool, right-click the container object that represents your server, and, from the shortcut menu, select Restart IIS. A Shutting Down dialog box appears informing you that the Internet services will be stopped. When this dialog box disappears, the Internet-related services are automatically started again. Starting or restarting the Internet services starts all these services in one cycle.
When you examine the registered event types, you will find numerous references to Exchange Server components, such as the Exchange Router, Exchange Store Driver, and Exchange Categorizer.
